Frank Phélan
Frank Phelan is grown in the winery of Chateau Phelan Segur, located in the region of Saint Estephe in the Bordeaux province of France. The wine itself, is named after the son of Bernard Phelan who was an Irishman who moved to France and acquired the Domaine Le Clos de Garamey back in 1805. Frank Phelan is born in a vineyard in Bordeaux which covers 15 hectares and boasts old vines and a selection of young vines less than 10 years old. The wine prides itself on the large presence of fruit flavours which are both intensive, yet satisfying. When the wine is pressed and fermented, it then spends 14 months ageing to ensure this is one of the finest wines produced in the region of Bordeaux.
Tasting Notes: The deep, concentrated ruby colour of this red suggests rich, complex fruit aromas and flavors – and the wine bears this out admirably. Ripe red and black fruits are present on the nose and palate, with blackberry and raspberry compote mingling with briar and dark chocolate.
The Irishman Bernard Phelan (1770–1841) acquired the Domaine Le Clos de Garamey in 1805 and Ségur de Cabarnac in 1810. In Ireland, he was a neighbour and friend of Hugh Barton who established Château Léoville-Barton. By his death in 1841 the estate combined to form Château Ségur de Garamey, which passed on to his son Frank Phelan, 30 years a mayor of Saint-Estèphe.
